It’s that exciting time of year again. The blossoms are out and Melbourne’s weather is on the improve (…well sort of!) And of course there’s Spring Racing – one of the best things about living in Australia’s coolest city. Not only do Melburnians get a public holiday for the Cup (air punch!) – the races are the perfect excuse to frock up and look divine. To really go the full glamour you need a beautiful hat or headpiece – and of course, knockout hair.
What are the looks for Spring Racing 2016? We spoke to milliner extraordinaire, Ann Shoebridge, who has created stunning hats and headpieces for the likes of Jennifer Hawkins, Rachael Finch and Nicole Ritchie – to name just a few of the celebrities Ann has worked with. Here’s what Ann says:
“For style trends in hats this year I would definitely say the boater is still very popular. Mainly because it is a sharp and smart style that is also classic and easy to wear. There are many styles of boaters, from traditional straws to more detailed lace ones and styles scattered with tiny vintage flowers.
Floral is also really big, with pastels and silk flowers on headbands and reverse bands. Headband styles are very easy to wear and super comfortable on long race days. They are great for parties and other events as well as they aren’t oversized. You can get great ones with beading and jewels, or metallic and architectural leather headbands.
Large brim frayed raffia hats are always a classic – they frame the face so well and provide the best sun protection of all.”

Awesome, your headpiece is organised. Time now to think about your hair. It’s a tricky question, just how do you combine the two for the ultimate look, without going overboard?
Naturally at Salon Lelu we can create any number of gorgeous do’s for Spring Racing, but we say – what’s better than a beautiful ponytail for a day out with the horses?
A ponytail is always a flattering and practical style to wear for a long day at the races, and allows your special hat or headpiece to be the hero. There are plenty of ponytail varieties; choose from textured or sleek, wavy or loose pieces for softness, depending on the overall look and style your going for. A ponytail worn just below the crown looks great with fascinators; for the boater style hat, go for a low pony at the nape – or alternatively, wear your hair out in loose waves.
However you choose to wear your hair for Spring Racing, make sure you make an appointment early at Salon Lelu. We get booked faster than Phar Lap in full flight! Email a photo of your hat or headpiece to Salon Lelu, to help us discuss how to best work your hair for the big event.
