Want to get a bead on the styles, cuts, and colours that will define the year? Salon Lelu gives you an insight to the seven hairstyles everyone will be craving for 17. The best thing is that almost anything goes, so whatever suits your style!
#1 The MoMu
You better believe it, the mullet is back, nearly 40 years after David Bowie rocked his ruby hued do as Ziggy Stardust. For those of you too young (or too old!) to remember, the main characteristic of a mullet is hair that’s longer at the back and shorter at the front – think two haircuts in one!
Fortunately 2017’s incarnation isn’t all ‘business in the front, party in the back’… the MoMu (aka Modern Mullet) has a contemporary feel that is softer, less angular, tousled and more glamorous. By adapting the MoMu to suit your age and face, it can be an absolute fashion winner!
#2 Super Sleek
Head straight into the future with a super sleek do. Reappearing in the celebrity mags and on the red carpets alike… what isn’t to like about gorgeous, sophisticated, polished long locks?
So be ready to make friends with hair straighteners once more… straight, shiny hair with a center part is one of the biggest trends for 2017. Sitting at absolute polar opposites to the MoMu, the Super Sleek look proves that anything goes these days – if it looks good!
Glossy straight hair is what it’s all about, it’s that simple. The trick of course is to keep your hair healthy and in absolute peak condition. Ask us at Salon Lelu how we can get your hair in great shape!
#3 Contour Colouring
Contour Colouring (aka Contourage) is an ‘eclipsing’ technique that picks out the light and dark shadowing around the face, helping to bring out your best features and achieve the ideal oval face shape. The concept is simple, yet highly effective; highlight certain sections of the hair to extenuate your facial features, in the exact same way that makeup colour contouring can create different shapes (ask your mum about the brown eyeshadow she used to dust on her cleavage in the 70’s!)
Not only does Colour Contouring give a more chiselled definition to bone structure, it also creates beautiful tones. Choose a golden blonde, warm-toned hair colour for example, and notice how in some lighting it’s blonde, and others it’s golden brown. A multi-flattering trend, whichever way you look at it!
#4 High Ponytails
High ponytails are one the most timeless, versatile and stylish hairstyles ever created. Kylie Minogue, Elle McPherson and Eva Herzigova are just some of the famous faces in love with this simple, smart style… and with good reason – the sheer physics of a ponytail can’t help but give your face a natural lift.
Fortunately, the simple high ponytail is bang on-trend this season, so slick your hair all the way up and look five years younger with the snap of a (very secure) hair tie. We adore a high ponytail at Salon Lelu – whether rumpled or stick-straight they look elegant and easy. We also like to combine them with braids and twists for a super chic look. Head into Salon Lelu and discover the gorgeous ponies we can create for you!
#5 Flat Waves
More subtle then beach waves, less glammed up then bouncy waves, Flat Waves offer just enough shape to make straight hair edgy and irresistible. Using a flat iron or straightener, you create a bend in your hair by pushing it upward, then sealing the shape with a few clamps of the iron. Release and repeat until you get the desired effect, keeping the ends straight for the most polished finish.
Sounds just a bit too tricky? Come to the Flat Wave experts at Salon Lelu – we’ll have you looking like the latest celebrities in no time.
#6 The Hair Flip
Some things just make perfect sense, and the immortal Hair Flip is one of them. Made famous in the nineties (and the eighties and the seventies…) it just so happens to be one of the most effortless and flattering hairstyles ever created. Without doubt the easiest hairstyle trend to copy this year, the Hair Flip is super simple. All it requires is you to flip your hair from one side to the other, creating tons of volume as a result. Blow-dry your hair to the right to wear it to the left… or blow-dry your hair to the left to wear it to the right… or blow the whole blow-drying thing off and let us do it next time you’re in!
#7 The Bardot Bangs
Remember Brigitte Bardot, the sultry French sex symbol from the sixties? (If you don’t, just go ask your dad, or granddad)! Aside from being a great actress, Bridgette Bardot was also known for her glorious Gallic blonde fringe (or bangs as they’re known to the good folk in the US).
Those very same Bardot inspired bangs are the newest trend to hop onto this year. Go for hair that sits just past the shoulders, with bangs that are long enough to be split down the middle. Shaggy and edgy, this is a classic hairstyle that is also undeniably feminine –and as timeless as so many European mid-century creations of the era. Just ask Goldie Hawn and Penelope Cruz… they’ve been banging on about the brilliance of this hairdo forever!
